Online fashion retailer Asos has announced a surge in sales of almost 50%, with the firm having continued to prosper during the downturn.

Sales for the six months to the end of September rose 47%, boosted by overseas sales that more than doubled.

Asos, formerly known as As Seen on Screen, targets 16 to 34-year-olds with cut-price versions of designer clothes.

In June, the company said that its profits had risen by 93%, to £14.1m, for the year to end of March.

The company now has 1.2 million customers, up from 890,000 a year ago.
