Downturn returns BSkyB to profit

BSkyB said it had seen a rise in customers

Satellite TV provider BSkyB has returned to profit this year, as customers opt for home entertainment in the economic downturn.

BSkyB, which is 39% owned by Rupert Murdoch's News Corp, saw profits of £259m in the year to 30 June, from a loss of £127m a year earlier.

The year saw 462,000 new customers bringing the total to 9.4 million.

Chief executive Jeremy Darroch said the firm was seeing customers join at the quickest rate in five years.

He said: "2009 has been an excellent year of growth. In a tough economic environment, customers are turning to Sky for quality and value in home entertainment and communications."

"New customers are joining us at the fastest rate for five years and existing customers are taking more products from Sky than ever before."

The firm, which broadcasts most Premier League matches, said that it would continue to increase its broadband and telephony business.
