Walter Chrysler launched his first Chrysler car in 1924, with the corporation formed a year later. By 1936, when this couple was enjoying their Royal Sedan, Chrysler was the second biggest US car company.

The two-millionth Jeep Grand Cherokee was shown off in 1999, confirming it as one of the corporation's most popular vehicles. By this time it was known as DaimlerChrysler, following a takeover by the German carmaker.
A decade later, unsold vehicles were accumulating - particularly once-popular trucks and SUVs. Chrysler was forced to make tens of thousands of staff redundant and along with General Motors, had to seek government help.
