Acer's global PC sales trail only HP and Dell

Acer, the world's third-largest maker of personal computers, has seen its profits slump by almost a third due to falling sales in the global recession.

The company made a net profit of 2bn Taiwanese dollars ($60m; £41m) in the first three months of 2009, down 31% from the same quarter last year.

Acer's revenues fell 7% from a year earlier to $3.6bn, as its results failed to meet market expectations.

The firm's falling sales are being replicated across the computer sector.

Acer has a 12.8% share of the global PC market, behind HP and Dell.

Despite predicting that its sales will continue to fall though 2009, Acer said it still aimed to increase its market share this year.
