BA and Virgin cut fuel surcharges

Like other airlines, BA has been steadily reducing its surcharge

Virgin Atlantic and British Airways will cut their fuel surcharges due to the fall in oil prices.

From Thursday the charge on BA's first and club world flights of no less than nine hours will be cut by �35 ($54).

Virgin will also reduce charges for upper class passengers on longer flights by �35 each way.

BA and Virgin first introduced �5 fuel surcharges on return flights in May 2004 when the price of oil was $36.50 per barrel.

Since then, some fuel surcharges on certain return flights have increased by more than 5,000%.

The price of oil climbed to nearly $150 per barrel this summer but is currently trading at less than $50.

Surcharges on BA's European and domestic flights will be reduced by up to �5, or 25%, and by up to �20 on world class flights of less than nine hours.

Virgin's passengers will also pay up to �20 less on shorter flights.

In October, BA and Virgin also reduced their fuel surcharges.
