Woolworths is ' high street icon'

Woolworth's TV advertisements became a part of the Christmas tradition 25 years ago - but the chain has since fallen upon hard times.

Administrators have begun efforts to rescue the chain, after the firm said its retail stores could no longer operate as a going concern.

High street shoppers described the national chain as an icon and said they were sad Woolworths had got into difficulty.
