Mastercard has seen a rising number of transactions

Mastercard has said its earnings more than doubled in the first three months of 2008 on higher use outside the US.

The New York-based card processing firm said it earned $446.9m (226.5m; 287m euros), up from $214.9m a year earlier.

Like its rival Visa, Mastercard processes card payments, but its member banks offer customers the credit.

The firm said regions outside the US, such as Latin America and South Asia, Middle East and Africa, were driving "significant growth".

Revenue rose 29.2% to $1.182 bn in the first quarter, helped by a 15.7% increase in the number of transactions processed.
