Maurizio Prato has the tough job of trying to find a new investor |
Alitalia has identified six possible bidders as it tries to resuscitate efforts to sell the state's 49% stake in the firm to a private investor. Airlines Air France-KLM, Lufthansa, Aeroflot and Air One, private equity firm Texas Pacific, and a financial consortium are all seen as candidates.
An earlier sale process collapsed after all the bidders pulled out over worries about conditions attached to the sale.
The airline is currently losing up to two million euros (1.3m) a day.
High costs, fierce competition and frequent strikes have all contributed to the firm's precarious financial position.
Experts said investors had been put off in the past by a lack of clarity about the firm's finances and obligations regarding future service levels.
The airline has cut back on services in recent months but its newly appointed chairman Maurizio Prato recently described the firm as "comatose".
