Cisco has benefited as companies have updated their networks
Cisco Systems has unveiled a 40% jump in quarterly profits, lifted by demand for internet networking equipment able to support video downloads.

The US technology giant said its net income in the three months to 27 January rose to $1.9bn (1bn), compared with $1.4bn in the previous year.

Cisco also raised its outlook for the current third quarter, quashing some fears about a slowdown in demand.

Shares in the firm jumped by almost 5% in after-hours trading in the US.

Cisco, which makes routers and switches that direct data over computer networks, has been benefiting from moves by internet service providers to boost bandwidth on their networks to accommodate increasing demand for video downloads.

"Cisco achieved record results that were well balanced across our geographies, products, services, customer segments and new markets," said Cisco chief executive John Chambers.
