Worldwide shipments of mobile phones topped the one billion mark in 2006, according to a leading industry report. Nokia, Motorola and Sony Ericcson were among the star performers last year, research firm Strategy Analytics said.
A record 300 million mobile phones were shipped worldwide in the final three months of 2006, up 22% from the same time a year earlier.
Strategy Analytics said shipments would continue to rise in 2007, reaching 1.1 billion units by the end of the year.
Nokia maintained its dominant global market position, shipping 348 million mobile phones during 2006.
Sony Ericsson also saw its fortunes improve, overtaking rival Samsung to become the world's third-largest vendor in terms of revenues, boosted by demand for its Ultra range of handsets.
