US computer firm Dell is opening its first service centre outside the US, with a 24-hour technical support service in Malaysia. The firm said the new centre, to be based in Cyberjaya south of Kuala Lumpur, will ultimately hire 1,000 Malaysians, including 600 by year end.
The centre's main role will be to give Dell staff IT support globally.
"We are growing in Asia," Dell said, adding that it recently announced a new factory in the Indian city of Chennai.
Dell, which has 5,500 workers in Malaysia already, has a manufacturing plant in Penang that makes 9 million computers every year.
The plant makes desktops, workstations, notebooks, servers and storage facilities for Asian Pacific customers, in addition to selling to US customers.
The news comes as Dell, long a rival of Hewlett Packard in the personal computer market, saw profits slide at the end of 2006.
While both firms had about a 16% share of the market for most of the year, by the final three months Dell's share had slipped to 14% whereas HP had risen to 18%.
