Hasbro benefited from a strong performance in its board game business |
Strong sales of a new edition of the Monopoly board game have helped offset declining sales of Star Wars toys and boosted Hasbro's third quarter profit. The US toy firm reported a net income of $100m (53m), up 8.2% on the same time last year.
The company behind Monopoly has introduced new versions of the board came including SpongeBob Squarepants and 70th anniversary editions.
Star Wars sales beat forecasts despite no new film being released this year.
The science fiction brand remains the "number one action figure property in the industry," Hasbro chief Alfred J Verrecchia said.
But Hasbro is hoping to decrease its reliance on Star Wars, launching action figures based on next year's new Transformers and Spiderman films.
Hasbro's results follow better-than-expected profit figures from rival toymaker Mattel, whose results were boosted by Barbie doll sales.
