BT has its sights on corporate clients in India and China
British Telecom is hoping to generate annual revenues of $250m (132.8m) from its operations in China over the next three years, the firm's chief has said.

The telecoms giant also expects to double its staff and its investment over the period.

BT plans to give China-based corporate clients access to broadband networks through joint ventures with Chinese firms such as Netcom.

Globally, it needs broadband business to make up for lost fixed-line revenue.

Chief executive Ben Verwaayen said that BT currently generated "tens of millions" of dollars from China.

Regulations have made investment in China difficult for foreign phone carriers.

But the size of the market makes the country an attractive target for companies. Latest figures show that China has 366.6 million fixed-line users and 431.8 million mobile users.
