England's World Cup team is set to appear on a great many new TVs |
Football fans are preparing to spend more than 1bn on new TVs and other audio-visual equipment in readiness for the World Cup, a report has said. The survey by insurer Direct Line found that one in five UK adults are planning to buy either a new television, DVD player, set-top box, or other item.
It further found that men are to spend twice as much on new kit than women.
Unsurprisingly, its adds that English homes plan to cheer on the England team more than those in Scotland and Wales.
'Full colour glory'
"World Cup fever is set to sweep the land with millions of homeowners snapping up the latest home entertainment kit and inviting friends and relatives over to enjoy the games in surround-sound, full-colour glory," said Direct Line spokesman Simon Ziviani.
The firm spoke to 2,500 people for its survey.
Its finding come after the Centre for Economics and Business Research said the World Cup could inject 1.25bn into the UK economy, driven by higher consumer spending.
Off-licences and pubs are set to reap the benefits of a host of thirsty football fans during the tournament, with sales predicted to rise by 285m, 1% of annual industry revenue.
The World Cup will run from Friday, 9 June to Sunday, 9 July.
