WH Smith is still selling The Economist in its travel stores |
The Economist business magazine has been withdrawn from sale in more than 500 WH Smith outlets because of a contractual dispute. Talks are ongoing, but neither side would reveal any details about the row.
WH Smith said it would still sell The Economist at 127 stores in airports and railway stations, which operate different contracts.
The magazine sells about 90,000 copies by subscription and 38,000 copies on newsstands each week in the UK.
"We haven't been able to agree terms under which WH Smith will stock us in the high street shops," said a spokesperson for the magazine, which is half-owned by Financial Times publisher Pearson.
The chain has withdrawn the magazine from the shelves in 542 stores.
WH Smith is one of the country's biggest magazine, newspaper, book and stationery retailers, selling 1.5 million magazines per week.
