UK drug firm settles patent row
Generic pills
No money changed hands as part of the settlement
British drug firm Shire Pharmaceuticals has settled a patent dispute with US rival Barr over its Adderall drug, dropping a threatened lawsuit.

Barr had sought to launch a generic version of Adderall, a treatment for attention deficit disorder, flouting Shire's patent on the drug.

Shire threatened to sue Barr but, under the deal, Barr will not now be able to make a US generic version before 2009.

Shire said it was "very pleased" with the agreement.

Chief executive Matthew Emmens said the agreement was "consistent with our beliefs that Shire's patents are valid and enforceable".

Shire's shares rose 1 pence to 889p in morning trading on Wednesday.
