Razor giant Gillette is attributing a 17% rise in quarterly profit to the success of new products.

The US firm, which also makes Duracell batteries and Braun electric shavers, saw its net profit increase to $498m (280m) in the three months to 30 June.

Sales of razors rose by 11%, helped by new lines including Venus Vibrance, a product for women.

Boston-based Gillette is in the process of being acquired by Procter & Gamble in a $57bn deal.

Gillette's quarterly profits beat market expectations, as did its sales, which jumped 13% to $2.8bn.

Consumer product giant Procter owns more than 300 household brands including Wella shampoos and Pampers nappies.
