Jorma Ollila, chief executive of mobile phone firm Nokia, is to become chairman of Royal Dutch Shell when he steps down from his current job next year. Mr Ollila announced his intention to leave Nokia, where he has worked for 20 years, earlier this week.
The oil giant revealed on Thursday that Mr Ollila would succeed Aad Jacobs as its non-executive chairman on 1 June 2006, the same day he leaves Nokia.
Mr Ollila transformed Nokia's fortunes after taking the top job in 1992.
Qualities
Mr Ollila described the chance to join the Anglo-Dutch company as a "wonderful opportunity".
Shell's deputy chairman Lord Kerr of Kinlochard said: "We were looking world-wide for a chairman with international standing, a global outlook and proven success in managing a complex organisation."
