Supermarket chain Tesco is in talks to hire a new manager to head up its clothing business as it gears up to open two non-food stores in October. The Sunday Times reported that Tesco is considering hiring Terry Green, former head of department store Allders, which went into administration in January.
Mr Green is credited with reviving rival Debenhams in the 1990s.
Tesco said "we don't comment on rumour and speculation." The paper said it would not be a main-board appointment.
Former colleagues
Mr Green used to work for John Hoerner, who was the head of Tesco's clothing business, but has "recently stepped back from day-to-day involvement to take on a consultancy role."
Tesco's clothing sales increased 28% to nearly �700m in the year to February 2005. Its clothing line includes �4 jeans.
The UK's largest supermarket retailer plans to open non-food stores in Aberdeen and Manchester in October.
