Baugur now owns 90 million Woolworths shares
Icelandic investment group Baugur has raised its holding in Woolworths to 6.18%, doubling its holding.

Baugur has been on an acquisition spree in the UK in recent years but gave no indication it was planning to add the High Street retailer to its portfolio.

It already owns coffee and tea retailer Whittard of Chelsea, jewellery retailer Mappin & Webb and fashion store Oasis.

Woolworths said Baugur now owns 90 million of its shares.

The retailer would not comment on the purchase or on whether it had received a takeover approach from Baugur.

In January Woolworths said that it had enjoyed a "satisfactory" Christmas trading period.
