Consumers 'struggling' with debts

Borrowers are finding life tough debt collectors say
Consumers are finding it increasingly difficult to meet their debts, the body representing debt collectors has said.

The Credit Services Association (CSA) said nearly half of its members were finding it harder to collect debt from people and businesses than last year.

The size of the average debt case CSA members deal with has risen from 1,200 to 1,300 over the past two years.

"Debt collectors are finding it harder to collect as consumers struggle to pay," CSA president Scott Soutar said.

The industry body added that they were being asked to chase more personal and business debts.

"Commercial debt is also on the increase...which means the economy might not be in as strong a position," Mr Soutar added.

Recent research for the CSA has shown that debt collectors are dealing with 20 million cases worth an estimated 5bn each year.
