Scottish powers up profits rise
Electricity pylon
Scottish Power is a major player in the UK energy market
Scottish Power has generated a 45% increase in profits for the first half of the year, but has declined to comment on recent takeover rumours.

Pre-tax profits rose to 273m in the six months to September 30, up from 189m in the same period of 2004.

But Scottish Power stayed quiet on rumoured takeover talks with German utility firm E.ON and a possible rival bid from Scottish & Southern Energy.

Its shares have risen steadily since E.ON declared an interest in September.

Scottish Power supplies energy to 5.2 million customers in the UK.

Hit by rising wholesale energy costs, it followed the lead of other power companies by announcing an increase in electricity and gas bills in October.
