The tyres in question were fitted to Ford's Explorer model |
Tyre firm Bridgestone is to pay $240m (137m) to Ford to end a long-running row over a huge safety recall scheme. Between three and four million 4x4 Ford Explorer vehicles, fitted with Bridgestone's Firestone tyres, had to be recalled in 2001 on safety grounds.
The tyres were linked to around 271 deaths and more than 800 injuries resulting from roll-over accidents.
The US arm of Japan-based Bridgestone - Bridgestone Firestone North American Tire - said the dispute was now closed.
To replace the tyres on all the recalled vehicles Ford spent $3bn, a figure that significantly impacted upon the company's financial results.
"We have resolved all of our differences with Bridgestone Firestone amicably," said the carmaker.
