 Motorola's latest phones have proven strong sellers |
Motorola has increased its share of the global mobile phone handset industry after seeing quarterly profits rise by 34%, ahead of Wall Street expectations. The US giant said its earned $654m (�350m) in the fourth quarter, compared to $489m a year earlier, thanks to strong sales of its 20 latest phones.
Overall sales rose to $8.84bn in the three months to December, up 27% on the same period in 2003.
Motorola's market share has risen to 16.6% from 13.4% in the third quarter.
It remains the world's number two handset manufacturer behind Finnish market leader Nokia.
Motorola chief executive Ed Zander said the reaction to the company's new range of products had been "enthusiastic", particularly its much-advertised, ultra-thin Razr handset, which he said "greatly exceeded sales expectations".
