Emap's magazine stable includes FHM, Heat and Empire |
Media group Emap has reported a modest rise in interim profits and said it has managed to stem tumbling sales at its French TV listings magazines. The owner of Magic and Kiss FM radio stations and men's magazine FHM said pre-tax profits rose 2% to 96m ($178m), with turnover up 3% to 522m.
Newsstand sales of its French TV magazines fell 25% in the first half, but the decline has now halted.
However, advertising revenues were "soft" across the market as a whole.
Shares in Emap dropped sharply in May this year after the firm said its French listing magazines Tele Star and Tele Poche had suffered from fierce competition.
On track
Emap said UK consumer magazine circulation revenues had started the second half "well", with growth across the portfolio and key titles such as Heat, Closer and Zoo all buoyant.
"We are on track for the current financial year, and we look forward to delivering good growth into the future," said chief executive Tom Moloney.
However, Emap's music magazines, which include Mojo, Kerrang and Q, suffered a slump in circulation revenues by 7%, with advertising revenues down 12% during the first half.
"The music market overall continues to suffer from a shortage of innovative new music, which is affected both circulation and advertising," Mr Moloney said.
