Aer Lingus is cutting costs to better compete with low cost rivals |
Irish airline Aer Lingus is planning to cut about 1,300 jobs over the next three years, a trade union has said. The plan is said to involve reducing the airline's existing staff by about a quarter at airports in the capital Dublin and at Shannon and Cork.
Talks between airline bosses and union officials over the plan were to start on Tuesday, the Services Industrial Professional and Technical Union said.
Aer Lingus recently announced that it was going to become a low-cost carrier.
The job cuts form part of the restructuring process.
"We are clearly opposed to the plan," the SIPTU union said in a statement.
"No clear case has been made out to us that there is a necessity for any redundancies, far less 1,300.
"We will not accept any compulsory redundancy and any attempt by the company to force change on us will be resisted."
