Lack of affordable childcare is a major problem |
Nearly a third of workers who become lone parents decide to give up their job, a survey from charity One Parent Families has found. The lack of affordable childcare was cited by 31% of lone parents as the main reason for them giving up work.
One in six lone parents blamed employers for not allowing flexible working, while 14% said stress stopped them from working.
Just over half of those who quit wanted to stay in work, the charity added.
"Too many parents who are struggling to hold on to jobs do not know where to turn for support and information to help them juggle work and parenting," said Andy Keen Downs, One Parent Families acting director.
However, the research also showed that two-fifths of lone parents who quit or cut their hours chose to spend more time with their children.
The research was carried out by YouGov who interviewed more than 2,000 lone parents on behalf of the charity.
