Tweed trainers bring jobs to the highlands |
The industry that is making Harris Tweed has long been in deep trouble. New fabrics and changing fashions have eroded the market for a cloth once regarded as the upper classes' leisure wear of choice.
But now Harris Tweed and the people whose jobs depend on it have been thrown a lifeline from the most unlikely of directions.
American sportswear manufacturer Nike has come up with a training shoe which features the tweed extensively.
Nike has produced a ladies' basketball boot made from Luskentyre designed Harris Tweed.
"This is good business for us and for the whole industry," says Derek Murray of the KM Harris Tweed Group.
"The Nike brand alongside the Harris Tweed label is priceless advertising."
As the shoes go on sale, the Money Programme tells the extraordinary story of this marriage between hip and old hat.
The Money Programme Nike's Highland Fling will be broadcast on BBC 2 on Wednesday 20 October at 1930.
