The outgoing chairman of Barclays Bank, Sir Peter Middleton, is to become the chairman of National Lottery operator Camelot, it has been announced. Michael Grade, the previous chairman, left Camelot when he became BBC chairman in May.

Sir Peter said of his appointment: "I am delighted to be joining Camelot in the year of the National Lottery's 10th birthday."
He said his main task would be to work with the government "to ensure a sensible and fair bidding process for the third lottery licence - and help lead any future Camelot bid for it".
As it announced its new chairman, Camelot revealed total sales of 1,167.7m between April and June this year, up 63.1m or 5.7% on the same period last year.
Sir Peter is to take up his new position after the next scheduled Camelot board meeting on 23 September.
