The Oscar-scooping Lord of the Rings trilogy has helped a film distribution company become the most profitable firm in the UK. Thanks to owning the exclusive rights to distributing the movies in the UK, the Entertainment Group saw its profits jump 197% a year from 2000 to 2003.
They went up from �2.4m to �61.6m, giving the London-based company the fastest growing profits in the UK.
It tops the latest Profit Track 100 Sunday Times PWC survey.
Entertainment Group is owned and run by brothers Nigel and Trevor Green after being founded by their father Michael Green in 1978.
Profitable relationship
The company took a cut of Lord of the Rings box office receipts in the UK - more than �57m for each of the three films - and also gets commission on continuing DVD and video sales and rentals.
It also owns a 22% stake in the Odeon cinema chain.
In second place in the Profit Track survey was media advice firm Ingenious Media.
Founded in 1998 by Patrick McKenna it offers media investment advice, such as working with the management company of singer Robbie Williams to help broker his giant record deal with EMI, said to be worth some �80m.
Ingenious Media achieved profit growth of 179.01% over the last three years.
In third place in the survey was insurance underwriter BDML, with profits up 159.61%.
