MTV viewers saw a blank screen |
Instead of a usual diet of Britney Spears, American MTV viewers on Tuesday were confronted by blank screens and a damning message about MTV's owner. Satellite television provider Echostar turned off MTV, Comedy Central and Nickelodeon in a contract dispute with Viacom over the cost of its programmes.
An estimated 1.6 million of Echostar's customers were affected.
Customers in Denver saw a message from Echostar saying the media giant was charging too much for its services.
$1 compensation
Viacom in turn urged Echostar's clients to stop subscribing to its Dish Network.
"We have solid business partnerships with virtually every other satellite and cable TV operator - except for Echostar Dish Network," Viacom said.
But Echostar's chairman Charles Ergen said Viacom was "holding the airwaves hostage" by charging so much. Echostar maintains Viacom has sought to raise prices by 40% over the length of its contract.
The satellite provider said it would provide $1 a month to customers who had lost access to certain programmes.
The dispute between Viacom and Echostar began after a contract enabling the Dish Network to broadcast Viacom channels expired on 31 December.
The contract was extended at least three times, voluntarily and by court orders.
The latest court order for the programming to continue expired last night.
Competition is increasing in the satellite TV market in the US, after years in which it has been overshadowed by cable operators.
Recently media mogul Rupert Murdoch has entered the business with his purchase of DirecTV, one of Echostar's main rivals.
