Ryanair is to stop flying from London Stansted to Rheims, Clermont Ferrand, Maastricht and Ostend and will try out other destinations instead.

The budget airline said weak demand would also force it to close a string of recently launched Nordic routes, and flights from Liverpool to Brussels.

Instead, Ryanair will fly from Stansted to Bari (Italy), Jerez (Spain), Erfurt (Germany) and Linz (Austria).

The new routes will be launched by the Irish carrier in January next year.

Ryanair is now serving 71 destinations from London Stansted.

Chief executive Michael O'Leary has repeatedly said he would cut unprofitable routes, even if that meant upsetting UK customers who bought second homes in certain regions of France because of the availability of cheap flights to the area.

Ryanair is at the centre of an investigation by the European Commission into whether it received illegal state subsidies at its Belgian hub of Charleroi.

Announcing a new route from Charleroi to Valladolid, Mr O'Leary said he was "demonstrating our commitment to Brussels Charleroi airport".

He was "hopeful that the EU Commission will recognise the enormous benefits for Belgian consumers and visitors of low fares" at Charleroi.
