Up to 10% of implants can go wrong

A UK insurance firm has developed a new policy for breast implant operations.

For �500, the Breast Assured insurance policy will pay out up to �5,000 if corrective surgery has to take place.

The habit of insuring body parts appears to be spreading, with celebrity bottoms and fingers already financially protected in the case of a mishap.

The policy, being offered by Trafalgar Risk Management, is believed to be the first of its kind in the UK.

And the company believes it will prove popular given that up to 10% of women who have breast enlargement develop problems following surgery.

Neil Inns, operations manager at Trafalgar, said: "A lot of young women these days are putting the enlargement operation on their overdraft or credit card, only to find that if something does wrong they have to live with the consequences, or struggle to borrow more money to put things right.

"Our cover will pay to correct any problems," he said.

"There is no reason why we cannot extend it to other body parts," he added.

Insuring body parts has more normally been associated with leading sports people and pop stars, such as Jennifer Lopez.

She has reportedly insured her famous bottom for $1bn (�583m).

But it appears the habit is now spreading, with UK celebrity chef Anthony Worrall Thompson recently insuring his fingers.

And body parts insurance has even attracted some non-celebrities such as Bristol housewife Nicole Jones, who insured her facial good looks for a six figure sum in a bid to keep her husband.

The 26-year-old pays �200 a year for the insurance which will pay out if she loses her looks.
