Better roads means better access to doctors |
Afghanistan has received $39.2m (23.4m) from the World Bank to create 300,000 temporary jobs. The much-needed jobs will supply a workforce to repair the country's badly damaged road network.
The project is expected to last a month and repair 2,000 kilometres of roads and 2,300 metres of bridges.
The Bank is releasing $18.8m as aid and $20.4m as an interest-free loan to fund the project.
Vulnerable groups such as returning refugees, displaced families and ex-fighters are in the most need of jobs in the short term.
And the Bank says improved roads are vital for rural communities to gain access to healthcare, education and markets for their produce.
