Philips scores over Remington
The Philips razor
Philips is still fighting other court battles to protect its razor

The electronics giant Philips has won a battle to prevent its rival, Remington, from selling triple head rotary shavers in Germany.

Philips said a German court had confirmed a preliminary injunction granted last August.

This is the latest move in a long-running battle between the two companies about their rival products.

Last year the European Court of Justice set standards for registering trademarks based on shape.

In a ruling that seemed to deal a blow to Philips, it said that the shape of a product might not be eligible for a trademark if it was essential to the way the product worked.

But it said it was up to individual European countries to make their own rulings in the Philips/Remington case.

More court cases

The German decision means that Philips and Remington have now notched up one win each.

Remington was allowed to carry on selling its triple head rotary razor in the UK.

Decisions have yet to be made in four other cases in France, Spain, Italy and Sweden.

The dispute between the two companies began in 1995, when Remington started selling a razor similar to the Philishave model.

The Dutch electronics giant took legal action against Remington for breach of trademark.
