Watchdog launches mortgage tables
A calculator
New comparative tables to help consumers save money
The City watchdog is launching a series of comparative mortgage tables to help consumers get a good deal.

The Financial Services Authority tables, which are being launched on Wednesday, will let consumers shop around and compare nearly 1,300 mortgages from 100 providers online.

The information available from the tables includes the interest rate charges, and any early redemption penalties.

In addition, borrowers can get information on other costs such as valuation fees, money back deals, and flexible loans offering payment holidays.

Consumer education

The FSA launched its first set of comparative tables for consumers a year ago.

People can compare costs and features on financial products, including Unit Trust & OEIC ISAs, personal and stakeholder pensions, investment bonds, mortgage and savings endowments.

Annuities tables are planned for Spring 2003.

The FSA recently launched a pension calculator in conjunction with the Association of British Insurers, an insurance industry body.

Beverley Brewster of the FSA's comparative tables team, said: "Unlike other websites, these tables are not trying to sell you a mortgage.

"They're intended to help you shop around and make a shortlist of the best value deals. Then you can explore the ones that interest you in greater detail directly with the provider or broker concerned.

The FSA's Guide to Mortgages is available free from the FSA Consumer Helpline on 0845 606 1234.
