Insurance warning for holiday makers
Check-in at Heathrow
The cut-price holiday industry is booming
British holiday makers taking advantage of low cost flight deals without having travel insurance are risking financial ruin, the government has warned.

Figures from the Foreign Office show that 43% of British travellers often fail to take out proper cover for short breaks overseas.

When all foreign travel made by Britons is considered, 13% fail to take out adequate insurance.

Foreign Office Minister Baroness Amos pointed the finger at the huge growth in the number of travellers taking advantage of low cost air travel and late holiday deals.

Raising awareness

"Trips made on impulse and short breaks to overseas destinations still need proper planning and adequate insurance cover, otherwise the consequences can be serious," Baroness Amos warned.

"For example, the cost of an air ambulance from Spain to the UK alone can be as much as 9,000 - this could wipe out a lifetime's savings".

The Foreign Office launched a special campaign last year, called Know Before You Go, designed to encourage British travellers to take more care over their travel preparations.

It aims to raise public awareness and encourage travel industry firms to join in partnership with the Foreign Office and promote the key messages - take out travel insurance and check out Foreign Office travel website before travelling.
