Fears of war between India and Pakistan have prompted Madras-based bank computing firm Polaris Software Lab to launch back-up operations in Singapore.

The company said the centre would ensure continuity of operations "in the case of any eventualities".

The tensions between India and Pakistan over Kashmir that in May and June brought the countries to the brink of war caused foreign companies to delay deals with India's software industry over security concerns.

"The launch of the business continuity centre in Singapore enhances Polaris' global prospects, especially in the wake of the heightened need for more stringent and detailed business continuity process," the firm said.

The Singapore operation is Polaris's first business continuity centre.

Business plans

Polaris said business continuity plans have become a priority for software companies in the wake of India-Pakistan tensions.

Indian software firms have experienced a boom because of the cheap service they offer to foreign companies looking to outsource operations.

Polaris began life as developing software for Citibank's Indian arm and still earns about one third of its revenue from the US bank.

It is currently merging with on of Citigroup's technology units, Orbitech Solutions.

Polaris has five development centres in India, offices in Hong Kong, London, Dubai, and the US and subsidiaries in Switzerland, Germany, Australia, Singapore, UK, Ireland and Japan.
