More than a million workers in Britain now have second jobs, according to official figures.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) said that over the past 17 years there has been a 68% increase in the number of people with another job.

Part-time workers were three times as likely to have second jobs as full-time workers, the ONS found.

Low-paid staff, such as cleaners, worked for more than one employer in order to earn more money.

But approximately 84,000 teachers, that is more than 7% of those employed in teaching, had another job.

Almost half had a second job within teaching.

There were also high rates of second jobs among sports and fitness occupations and people in health work and childcare.

Men worked an average of nine hours a week in a second job, one hour more than women.
