Strike threatens Bombardier

A strike is set to bring production to a halt in three of the Canadian industrial group Bombardier's civil aircraft factories.

Production of some of Bombardier's Canadair Regional Jets and of the Challenger business jet could be affected.

About 8,000 workers are expected to lay down their tools on Monday following failed wage talks over the weekend.

The workers rejected an offer of a 3.25% wage hike and a 1,000 Canadian dollars bonus.

Third strike

"Nothing has changed. We are set to strike on Monday," said trade union spokesman Vincent Blais of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers.

The strike is set to last until an acceptable offer of higher wages and pensions is on the table, the union said.

The latest strike would follow two previous one day strikes, the first on 1 April, the second last Thursday.

World leader

Bombardier, one of Canada's leading industrial groups, is the world's third largest civil aviation manufacturer and a leading maker of regional jets and passenger trains.

It also makes snowmobiles, small boats and off-road vehicles.

Bombardier shares rose 4.2% on Friday to close about 50% higher than its post 11September lows.
