The shoppers' watchdog said it had found several examples of misleading labelling on brands, including a crab paste that contained only 11% crab meat, and a cranberry and apple juice with just 7.5% cranberry.
The CA will publish a list of the worst offenders when it launches an "honest labelling" campaign at the end of April. Consumer complaints Liz Edwards, senior researcher at CA publication Which?, said: "We get a lot of complaints from our readers about confusing or misleading labelling. "It is an area that needs manufacturers to be much more honest and upfront and the laws to be tightened. "There has been a marked improvement in some areas of labelling but there is still plenty of cause for concern." One product highlighted by Which? in an edition published on Thursday was Safeway chicken and vegetable savoury rice, which was found to be 82% rice and only 6% vegetables. According to Which?, the chicken content was not even given but came near the end of the list of ingredients, just before herbs. A Safeway spokeswomen said she could not comment on the particular product but stressed: "We comply with all labelling legislation and guidelines and we take labelling very seriously." | See also: Top Business stories now: Links to more Business stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
