The longest planning inquiry in British history began in May 1995 at the Ramada Hotel, a stone's throw away from Heathrow's northern runway.

More than six years later the government is poised to rule on whether Heathrow terminal five should be built.

Most of those who sat through nearly four years of hearings believe it will, but the debate rages on.
