Vitamin cartel set to cost firms dear

The controversy surrounds vitamins used in animal feed
Leading chemical firms including Roche of Switzerland and the German giant BASF might be fined record amounts this week for fixing the price of vitamins, newspaper reports have said.

German press reports say that the European Commission is preparing to impose penalties of tens of millions of dollars after unravelling an illegal cartel that forced consumers around the world to pay more for products containing vitamins.

Between 1990 and 1998, various salesmen got together and agreed cartel prices for different vitamins, a senior analyst has told the BBC's World Business Report.
