| Monday, 24 September, 2001, 10:30 GMT 11:30 UK Insurance victory for stranded travellers Stranded passengers in New York Lloyds TSB is now offering to pay some additional accommodation costs from its policyholders who have been stranded in the US as a result of the terrorist attacks. Like many insurers, Lloyds TSB does not cover any costs associated with curtailment or cancellation caused by "acts of terrorism" or acts of war".
However, Lloyds TSB changed its mind two days after BBC News Online submitted details of e-mails we received from its customers, who were stranded in the US. One reader said that he would have to curtail his wedding plans as a result of the additional expense involved. Change of heart The reader also threatened to move his account. He wrote: "I will take great pleasure in moving my bank account, investments, mortgage and credit card from Lloyds upon my return, and urging my friends and family to do the same." Lloyds TSB Insurance has agreed to pay for hotel accomodation for those who have been stranded in the US between Tuesday 11 September and 25 October. "It is a goodwill gesture. People have genuinely suffered and we want to help in a way that we can," said a spokeswoman for Lloyds TSB. Mixed mail bag BBC News Online has had a number of e-mails about travel insurance following an article on 14 September "Insurers reluctant to help travellers". Many people were unaware of the exclusion clauses for war and terrorism. Some people were having problems with a range of travel companies, and insurers because of the attacks - but others were pleased with how some companies had reacted to the events. Lesley Brown from the UK wrote: "We have just cancelled a flight to Toronto, booked through 1click4flights.com, accommodation booked through RCI and parking at Gatwick (BAA) - all have given a full refund 'due to the special circumstances'. BAA alone charged a 5 handling charge. It's nice to know that there is still compassion out there." BBC News Online would still like to hear your experiences. | See also: 17 Sep 01 | Business 17 Sep 01 | Business 20 Sep 01 | Business Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top Business stories now: Links to more Business stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
