Thomas the Tank Engine's recent foray off the rails, across the Atlantic to Hollywood, has reaped huge earnings. A feature length film about Thomas and friends has clocked up cinema receipts of more than $50m (34m) and is still going strong. Gullane Entertainment, which owns the media rights, has reported pre-tax profits up 59% at 9.21m, and forecast more rail-backed earnings to come. "Our plan is to produce up to 78 new [Thomas the Tank Engine television] episodes over the next three years, which will expand Thomas' world, by adding new characters and locations," said chief executive William Harris. Thomas: Engine for growth Thomas is undoubtedly Gullane's biggest star, although recently Sooty, Captain Pugwash, Mumfie and James the Cat have the company's portfolio of characters.
"As we continue to grow our business and make acquisitions, Thomas contributes a lower percentage of the group's revenue, despite the brand's strong growth," said chairman Adam Mills. "Excluding the effects of the feature film, Thomas accounted for around 70% of our revenue in the year, compared with 83% in the prior year." New records Gullane acquired Guinness World Records in July for 45.5m. "The acquisition has given us ownership of another quite exceptional brand, which attracts a particularly strong following amongst 8-13 year old boys," said Mr Harris. "We believe that there is significant potential for growth in all areas of the GWR business." | See also: Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top Business stories now: Links to more Business stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
