| Wednesday, 22 August, 2001, 08:18 GMT 09:18 UK Cathay pilots back more action ![]() This latest dispute has been running for weeks Pilots at the Hong Kong-based airline, Cathay Pacific, have voted overwhelmingly to step up industrial action in a dispute over pay and conditions. At an extraordinary general meeting, 92% of pilots present backed the escalation but union officials did not say what form it would take. In the early weeks of the dispute, which began on 3 July, the pilots' go-slow action led to the delay or cancellation of hundreds of flights costing the airline $350m.
But a Cathay Pacific official said in the past week more pilots have been taking sick leave causing the cancellation of a number of flights. The head of the pilots' union, John Findlay, denied the charge and called on the airline to re-enter negotiations. In July, the pilots rejected a deal which included a pay increase of more than 9%, saying their main complaint involved the airline's plan to change work rosters without consulting staff. The airline has sacked 52 pilots since the dispute began saying it had lost confidence in them. |
