| Wednesday, 25 July, 2001, 18:09 GMT 19:09 UK New tyre failures haunt Ford ![]() Ford uses General tyres on its popular F150 pickup truck Embattled car maker Ford has been hit with another potential defective-tyre scare, involving a tyre maker other than Firestone. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has said it is opening an investigation into the General Ameri 550 AS tyre, which Ford has been using as a replacement for certain Firestone tyres on Ford Explorers. The General-brand tyre, manufactured by Continental of Germany, was cited as suffering the same tread-separation problems as the Firestone Wilderness AT tyre, the NHTSA said. The government agency said the tread-separation rate on the Ameri 550 AS is 20 times higher than that of Firestone Wilderness AT tyres which Ford says are unsafe. While 16-inch versions of Ameri 550 AS have been used in Ford's ongoing tyre replacement programme, the tyre is primarily used as original equipment on Ford's popular F150 pickup trucks. Ford pulls General from list The NHTSA on Tuesday said it plans to investigate the General tyre in question but said 10 other tyres makes being used by Ford to replace Firestone tyres raised no concerns.
In response to the NHTSA's objection to the General Ameri 550 AS, Ford has said it was removing the tyre from its replacement list. Ford vice president of environmental and safety engineering Susan Cischke said in a statement the 16-inch General tyre had met all Ford's requirements for use as a replacement on Ford Explorer vehicles. "Nevertheless, to alleviate any customer confusion, we have removed this tyre from our approved tyre replacement list," she said, pending an investigation by the NHTSA. Federal Officials have reportedly told Firestone that the company needs to recall an additional four million tyres for safety problems. Congressional testimony Ford officials were blindsided last month during testimony before the House of Representatives, when it was announced congressional research had revealed some of the tyres replacing Firestone Wilderness AT models were also failing at high rates. At the time, House Energy and Commerce Committee chairman Billy Tauzin refused to disclose the brand name or model of the similarly defective tyre. House members also criticised the Ford recall campaign, calling it more of a public relations scheme than a public safety issue. |
