Day 7: Tuesday, 30 January

Strangely quiet here this afternoon.

Black limousines have departed and with them the trappings of a massive security operation.

Davos can get back to the business of being a ski resort, until the next time.

It has been a hectic but productive week. As always, I leave with many new ideas and some new friends.

But what of the big themes? What are my overriding impressions? What did we achieve?

Not a perfect world

The starting point perhaps is that in contrast to last year, there is a much wider recognition that the world is far from perfect.

Complacency has been replaced by realism.

Certainly we have seen progress on many fronts but the world still faces huge and daunting challenges.

However, I detect a real desire for peace and stability, a real chance to bridge the divides in the world.

Above all, there is a desire for action, to move beyond debate and fine words.

This came through strongly at several of the industry leaders' meetings today and yesterday.

A consensus of opinion?

Moreover, there is recognition that these actions have to be supported by all elements of society.

It was significant that NGOs and other civil society representatives, despite yesterday's acrimony, attended many of these meetings.

Am I glad to be leaving? Yes.

These are exciting times and there is much work to be done.

Will I look forward to being back next year? Absolutely.

Davos is a unique experience.

It is up to all of us who have been here to continue the dialogue over the next year, so we can make real progress.
