The opposition in Kyrgyzstan says it is in control of the country following violent demonstrations in the capital, Bishkek.
The new leaders are in control of government headquarters in Bishkek, where there are scenes of chaos and destruction after a night of looting.
Witnesses said between 3,000 and 5,000 protesters overturned cars and set them on fire on Wednesday.
Protesters jumped on top of heavily-armoured police vehicles, waving the national Kyrgyz flag and the blue flag of the opposition movement.
Riot police were deployed in large numbers, using batons, tear gas and finally rounds of live ammunition to quell the protests.
But the demonstrators were not easily subdued, and violent street battles broke out between the protesters and police.
As the battle played out in Bishkek, senior officials including the interior minister were badly beaten in the town of Talas.
Some 65 people were reportedly killed in the violence, and another 500 were injured.
Several police officers appeared to have been badly beaten and taken hostage by protesters.
The protesters are calling for President Kurmanbek Bakiyev to step down, accusing him of becoming increasingly autocratic and failing to manage the economy. His whereabouts are unknown.
One opposition leader, Roza Otunbayeva, told the BBC that the interim government would remain in power for six months and draw up a new constitution.
