Typhoon Melor has lashed Japan's main island of Honshu, killing two people and injuring at least 40.
The powerful winds knocked down trees and power lines, cutting electricity to tens of thousands of households in central parts of Japan as well as Tokyo.
The storm peeled roofs off houses, with one resident saying that "it felt like a huge earthquake".
Hundreds of thousands of commuters in the Tokyo region were stranded as overland train services were suspended during the busy morning rush hour.
Train services elsewhere in Japan were also disrupted as landslides blocked rail lines, as here in Aichi prefecture. Hundreds of domestic flights and some international flights were also cancelled.
The typhoon left a trail of damage across central Japan, including this bridge in Chita, destroyed by flooding.
The storm weakened as it moved into the Pacific, leaving blue skies over the Tokyo region in its wake.
